Do you want to try Platelet rich Plasma knee arthritis ? What is it? Platelet rich Plasma ( PRP) involves an injection of the patient’s own blood into the knee after processing. PRP injections have been shown to relieve pain of early osteo-arthritis. In a recent paper published in the American journal of sports medicine in 2013, it was shown that Platelet rich Plasma was effective in alleviating the pain of early osteo-arthritis.
How is it done?
It is an office or clinic based procedure. Blood is collected from a peripheral vein and centrifuged. A concentrated protion of the blood containing Platelets is obtained. This is injected into the knee as shown in the accompanying photo. The patient can return to normal activities.
How soon will the effect set in?
It may taek about ten days to two weeks for you to feel better. Sometimes a second injection may be needed.
How long does the effect last?
Given in early osteo-arthritis, they can provide pain relief for upto six months.
