Anatomy
The ilitoibial band is a long band of tendon extending from the ilium to the knee. It helps to bind the thigh muscle down. It can become inflamed in people who overuse it, say in runners and cyclists.
Symptoms
A snapping sensation over the knee whenever the knee bends. .Pain over the tendon which is worse with activity and better with rest. .Tenderness over the band.
Risks
Activities in which there is repeated bending of the knee as in cyclists and runners. Rapid body building can lead to this condition.
Prevention and treatment
Slow body building. R I C E (rest, ice , compression and elevation) will help. NSAID’s will control the pain. If the band is thickened and pain persists, then excision of the band remains the only line of treatment.
