Meniscal preservation is very imprtant for knee function. When a person tears his ligaments like the ACL, he may devleop Meniscal injuries.
When should they be repaired?
Peripheral tears of the mensisci can be repaired before as soon as possible. This gives them the best chance to heal. When the ACL is also torn, Meniscus repair is done along with the ACL reconstruction. With advanced and unreparable tears meniscal implant may be possible in the near future in India. Long standing Meniscal tears may not heal even if sutured.
How is it done?
Meniscal repair is done by advanced key hole surgery. Sutures are passed through the torn portion and it is anchored to the intact rim as shown in the picture. Protected weight bearing for six weeks is mandatory after meniscal repair.
